What is Missoula’s Population? 

The city of Missoula is home to around 75,000 residents. Since Missoula is home to the University of Montana, it’s non-resident population fluctuates throughout the year. It’s estimated that during the peak of the school year, there are around 15,000 students. Missoula is Montana’s second most populous city. 

What’s the weather like in Missoula, Montana? 

Missoula’s climate is similar to the rest of Montana, with warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters; however Missoula hasn’t seen the traditional influx of snow in recent years. You can expect snow about 3 days of each winter month. Additionally, Montana is notorious for its wildfire season, usually in late July and August. Despite the wildfire season, Missoula has incredible summer weather – perfect for floating the river and exploring downtown patios. 

What does “Missoula” mean? 

The word “Missoula” is derived from the Salish word “Nmesulétkʷ,” which loosely means “place of freezing water”–referring the the Clark Fork River that runs through Missoula. Long before Missoula became Missoula, this area was home to the people of the Séliš, Ksanka, Ql̓ispe̓ tribes—known in English as Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreille (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes).

Is Missoula Dog Friendly? 

Missoula has many fully fenced dog parks all across the city. While residents love their furry friends, local health codes disallow dogs in most businesses, including on restaurant patios. If you're planning a trip out and about in Missoula, it's best to leave the pup at home (after taking it to play in the dog park, of course!). 

How far is Missoula from Glacier National Park?

Missoula, Montana is a 2.5 hour drive from the stunning Glacier National Park. On the drive, expect to see mountain views and the gorgeous Flathead Lake.

Yes, Missoula has an airport. Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) is just minutes from Downtown Missoula and serves as a hub for many travellers. The key flight destinations Missoula serves are Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas, Portland, Las Vegas, and Phoenix/Mesa.  

MSO recently underwent extensive renovations and now serves as an incredible, modern, technologically advanced airport.
