Support your local community library.

Libraries are a safe haven and a staple in modern culture for many reasons. Not only do they provide a safe, quiet place to escape the crazy world! They also provide free, endless resources to enjoy at any age. From picture books, novels of any kind, newspapers, and access to computers, the possibilities of what you can do at the library are infinite! They’re such an important part of a strong community.
Despite their historic and community importance, libraries are often overlooked by budgets and on the edge of being cut! According to BBC, many libraries still run the risk of being cut despite an unprecedented rise in users! There’s a few things you can do a citizen to help protect libraries in your communities, and ensure free access to these important resources, and shelter, for generations to come!
VISIT
One of the simplest and easiest ways that you can show support for your local library and keep it in business is just by visiting! Use all of these amazing resources, so you can indicate to the budgeteers of the government that the library is of use to the community.
Beyond the obvious access to books, libraries offer so much more. Even just spending time at one gives families and individuals a safe place to explore, learn and grow. There’s so many community events held at libraries, and these structures often provide a safe haven for those who can’t find it anywhere else. Some libraries even offer after-school help on homework, games, and workshops! Community hubs, libraries are the serenity within which true building and growth can take place.
USE AND KEEP AN ACTIVE CARD
Library cards are the ticket to so many materials, it’ll make your head spin! Not only do they grant you the power to take a little piece of the library home with you to borrow, they also provide you access to thousands of E-books, movies, TV shows and games! You can even have access to old newspapers, massive databases and courses, and more.
Often, local businesses will run deals with the library where having a library card can even mean you get access to events for discounted or even free prices. This makes these little plastic cards incredibly beneficial not only to you, but the community at large including businesses.
USE THEIR RESOURCES
This is the most exciting and easy way to help! Which is mostly covered by the first two, but there’s more to it. You can be an effective community member by simply reading books at the library, checking them out and taking them home, and utilizing any of the resources that you need. Whether it’s just a place to escape, get some free wifi, and dig into your work, or you just need books.
By using these resources, you’re indicating that the budget spent on libraries in our communities is well worth it. There’s another way you can make your voice heard on the budget options when it comes to community resources.
VOTE
Voting is a privilege and an honor in many ways, obviously, but especially when it comes to your community. Voting is much more than who is president. While this is the most publicized affair, you’re likely to be more affected by the smaller offices in your town. So, go to the budget meetings and vote for local officials that understand the value of community and public resources! DONATE
Whether you’re donating funds, books, or even canned goods for the holidays, libraries are great places to give back! Libraries also have book sales where you can give back and get something out of it! Or, you can teach a class, hold a fundraiser, and more! There’s plenty of ways to give back to your local library, and the best way to get started is to speak with a librarian onsite.
